The loss of magnetisim comes from various things, but is basically the loss of magnetisim for the rotor. Capacitors store energy for "jump starting" and assisting with excitation of rotors. It is the rotor that when magnetized by circuits within the generator, via the brushes, induces magnetisim into the stator winding resulting in electricity produced.
